La Cattedrale di Manfredonia/The Chatedral of Manfredonia

La Cattedrale di Manfredonia/The Chatedral of Manfredonia

THE CHATEDRAL

The Chatedral of Manfredonia was built in 1260 during the Angevin period and is dedicated to San Lorenzo Maiorano, bishop of Siponto (488-545) and current Patron Saint of the city.
However, the present building is very different from the old one, also because of the destruction occurred in 1620 due to the  of the sacking of theTurks, who burned it.
It was rebuilt over more than a century (more precisely between the XVII and XVIII), even for will of the Archbishop Vincenzo Maria Orsini (later Pope Benedict XIII), which built at his expense the bell- -tower site next to the Cathedral.

The barrel-vaulted nave and the quadrangular apse with the cupola were decorated with stucco between 1840 and 1850while later in 1940, the Milanese painter Natale Penati painted the insides. Nowadays, however, remained only some of its decorations.
Even the facade that turns the square was changed in the '60s.

We remind inside three important works of art: an icon of Our Lady of Siponto and a wooden statue of the Madonna and Child, both of the twelfth century from the ancient Cathedral of Siponto and the wooden crucifix, always from the twelfth century and by the Church of St. Leonardo in Lama Volara.
Also there is the tomb in which lie the remains of St. Lorenzo Maiorano.
