Accadia (english)

ACCADIA

A bit of history

At 650 m. altitude stands, between the mountains of the Sub-Apennines, the small town of Accadia.
Of medieval origin, it is said it arises on the ruins of the city of Accua town of Irpinia, but the tradition links its name to a temple situated therein  dedicated to Eca or to the Goddess Acca.
There are around it Roman remains, taking us back to the destruction of the city by Silla in 88 a. C. and to their domination.

During the Norman domination we know about Accadia that it was just a small village, but placed along the traffic routes  through the Apennines.

During the period of the fights between the Angevins and Aragonese, it was destroyed again by fire after a long siege by Ferrante of Aragon.
It was a feud of the Caracciolo, of Recca and Dentice. Later it passed from the Capitanata to the Irpinia, only to be, in 1927, reported to the province of Foggia.

   What to see

RIONE FOSSI

Characteristic to look at is Rione Fossi, which is the oldest urban nucleus of the country, with medieval houses and caves.

It is said it's being restored what I found is actually a piece of
"ghost" land  in which houses someone started a renovation, but then everything was abandoned to vandals.

I was there in a windy day (which here seems to be normal) with a sinister sound of slamming doors and squeaking by "ghostly atmosphere."

  Along the way...

Along the main road to get to Rione Fossi you come near a sixteenth century palace with its beautiful loggia: it is the Civic Museum .

At the end of the street, facing the beginning of the path to Rione Fossi, we find the monumental fountain built in the early nineteenth century, it seems a small temple supported by four columns of local stone. On it there is a bronze panel depicting the siege of Aragon in 1462.

Next to it, is located  the Clock Tower, 10 meters high, built in 1883.

There are several churches, among which I mention the Santuario della Madonna di Crispignano located on Mount Crispignano (1105 m), where Our Lady of Mount Carmel appeared to a shepherd. It dominates the town.
The Church of St. Vito is instead located in the center of the country.

(This, however, I can only say to "tell the truth", as visiting hours did not allow me to know them personally.)
